(un)intelligent design
<

Proponents of intelligent design argue that life on Earth is just too complex to have arisen without the aid of some kind of designer. ID's critics point out that its main tenets are highly unscientific and untestable, and say that it is merely creationism in disguise.
No credible member of the scientific or academic communities has ever proven that intelligent design is anything more than a faith-based philosophy masquerading as science, grounded on the Genesis account of the creation of life.
What these "literalists" fail to understand is that the stories that make up the bible were written by people who believed the earth was flat and the world was the centre of the universe! In the absence of science they just believed what they were told by their elders. The present day adherents of intelligent design are making the same mistake.

Hi Lerryn,
I disagree with you when you say that adherents of intelligent design are making the same mistake as people in the past made in the absence of science.
(In fact, I might even say that it's science that is making the same mistake people in the past made - remember they also thought they understood the way the world worked!)
ID, as I understand it (and I'm not well read on 'official' ID theory, so I may be talking bs), simply points out that the universe, life (and everything!) cannot be completely and satisfactorally explained without resorting to the idea that there is some kind of design involved. Traditional evolutionary theory says that the apparent 'design' of life is an illusion and that evolution is a blind mechanistic process. I personally cannot accept that, just like I cannot accept the idea that the unverse exploded out of nothing in an instant. It just sounds too fanciful to me. This doesn't mean I believe in god or the bible (I don't) it simply means that science cannot explain everything. Science is a tool. An incredibly useful tool mind you, but it's not the be all and end all of everything.
